History of Hoodoo (Conjure) Oil Lamps
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
The oil lamp is a vessel that burns fuel to produce light continuously for long periods of time.
Traditional conjure (hoodoo) oil lamps historically have being used for magic, prayer, petition, and spell casting, especially within the traditions of the African Diaspora, ceremonial Magick, and Jewish Mysticism.
In Judaism oil lamps are used in several traditional Jewish rituals as light is seen as being spiritually constructive and meaningful as the eternal emanation of the divine and its power.
The Bible says in the Old Testament,
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105, and “And you shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive-oil for the light, that a lamp may be set to burn continuality.”
In Christianity many Eastern Catholic Churches oil lamps are still employed on both the church altar and to illuminate icons. Orthodox Christians will also oil lamps to illuminate their icon corner in their homes.
The oil burned in all of these lamps is by tradition oil.
The Bible says in the New Testament,
“Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your who body is sound, your whole body if full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness.”
The first kerosene oil lamps where invented in 1850. Kerosene, also known as coal oil, was the most common lamp fuel used in small towns and rural areas well into the 20th Century. Today, paraffin is the most popular choice for lamp oil due to its clean burning, smokeless and virtually odorless properties.
Oil lamps used for magical applications such as Ceremonial Magick and traditional Hoodoo Conjure are used in conjunction with spells and magical operations for spiritual purposes and effect outward changes for lives of practitioners and their clients.
Oil Lamps are dedicated to a specific condition such as love and romance, for a named client, or for a group of targeted persons. They are then prayed over, set upon appropriate curios, petition papers, talisman, or Psalms, prepared according to the style of the magical practitioner and the specific needs of the client. After this, an appropriate elected time is selected for the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, and it is decided how long it will be left burning on a daily basis. Any final prayers or petitions that may be needed for a specific case are made over it as it is lit and set to work.
